How to Approach a Loved One About Hoarding

Raising the subject of hoarding is delicate. Handled well, the conversation can open the door to support; handled badly, it can cause the person to shut down. Here's how to approach it with care.

Pick your moment

Choose a calm, private time when neither of you is rushed or stressed. Avoid raising it in the heat of frustration or in front of others.

Lead with love and concern

Make it clear that your worry comes from caring about them, not about the state of the house.

  • Use gentle, non-judgemental language
  • Focus on safety, health and wellbeing
  • Ask open questions and really listen
  • Reassure them that they remain in control
  • Avoid words like 'mess', 'rubbish' or 'hoarder'

Be patient

Change takes time. One conversation rarely 'solves' things, and that's normal. Keep the door open, offer to find support together, and celebrate any small step forward.

Offer a next step

When they're ready, a confidential, no-pressure chat with a compassionate team can help. We're always happy to talk things through — 0800 494 7220.
